John Benjamins e-Platform: a dense, scholarly article page
A content-rich platform for e-journals, e-books and book series, with an article page built around how scholars read and cite.
Role: UX and front-end developer
The problem
John Benjamins publishes journals, books and book series for humanities scholars. Readers need to see quickly what they can access, move around a long article, and find the tools for citing and sharing it.
What I did
- Organised the main navigation by content type: e-Journals, e-Books, Book Series, Online Resources and Collections, plus Subjects.
- Showed Most read and Most cited lists side by side on the home page, with open access markers, so readers can see what is popular and influential at a glance.
- Built the article page around the cover image, authors, DOI, key dates and previous and next links, with tabs for Abstract, Full-Text, Figures & Tables, References, Cited By, Supplements, Metrics and Related Content.
- Added a Tools panel for EPUB and PDF, favourites, alerts, citation export, recommending to a library and reprints.
- Used an access key of icons for subscribed, open access, free trial and free content, so each item shows what the visitor can read.
- Kept urgent notices, such as the proxy server message, prominent on the home page and in the sidebar.
The outcome
Locked in a long-term customer with a solution that meets their requirements. John Benjamins has now been with us for more than 10 years.
