Personal projects

Things I build in my own time, mostly to learn.

Family tree

A website that charts my family ancestry and lets relatives help build it, without losing editorial control.

  • Built on webtrees, the open source genealogy application, and set up so family members can request an account and contribute.
  • Contributions go through the site's own account and permission controls, so the tree stays accurate while more people add to it.
  • Access is by account only, so there is no public screenshot here.
  • webtrees
  • Open source
  • Genealogy

Shopping list app

A progressive web app for keeping a shopping list, installable on a phone.

  • Built with React as a progressive web app (PWA), so it can be added to a home screen and used like a native app.
  • Packaged and deployed with Docker.
  • Items can be typed in, or dictated with the Record and Transcribe button.
  • React
  • PWA
  • Docker

Diet composition chart

An interactive chart I built to learn D3.

  • Shows how the make-up of national diets changed from 1961 to 2013, using FAO food supply data, with a stacked area chart or a line chart and a country picker.
  • Each food group is filled with a photo texture, such as grains, meat and eggs, so the chart reads at a glance.
  • D3
  • JavaScript
  • Data visualisation
A stacked area chart of Australian diet composition from 1961 to 2013. Each band is filled with a photo texture: cereals and grains at the top, then sugar, oils and fats, meat, dairy and eggs, fruit and vegetables, and alcoholic beverages.

Calculator demo

A working calculator built as an Angular demo.

  • A small Angular application with the four basic operations, decimals, and AC and CE keys.
  • Angular
  • TypeScript
A calculator with a display showing 0 and a keypad with digits, the divide, multiply, subtract and add operators, an equals key and AC and CE keys.
