Annual Reviews: a search-first journal platform

A home page that starts with search and a scholarly article page that puts the key actions first.

The problem

Annual Reviews came to Ingenta looking for help integrating their academic content and their existing organisation site content in one place, as well as upgrading their interface to be accessible and compliant.

What I did

  1. Helped, as part of a small team of 3, to integrate our "Edify" journal platform with their existing journal sites design.
  2. Ported over some 300 static pages from their previous customer site, storing them as customer-editable blurb pages.
  3. Helped build a pipeline for their existing journal catalog so the customer can load articles via JATS XML upload.
  4. Imported some 2,000 scholarly articles from their previous platform to this one.
  5. Converted their front end to be WCAG 2.2 AA compliant, so it is fully usable with a keyboard, screen readers and other assistive technologies.

The outcome

The main achievement for me was the accessibility improvements, made to ensure keyboard and screen reader technology can read the site.
